ASTM A108 covers several cold-finished carbon and alloy steel bar routes. It does not make every route interchangeable. The purchaser still needs to specify the required grade, dimensions and supplementary requirements.
When Is Cold Drawn Bar the Better Starting Point?
- The required section is square, hexagonal, flat or a custom profile.
- The buyer wants a near-net section to reduce repeated machining stock.
- Corner radius, section shape, twist and straightness are drawing-controlled features.
- The order includes repeated distributor sizes or OEM profile lengths.
- The quotation must include cut length, drilling, punching or another agreed secondary operation.
Cold drawing may improve dimensions and surface compared with hot-rolled starting stock, but the actual tolerance and straightness still depend on grade, shape, size and process route. Do not write “cold drawn” as a substitute for a dimensional specification.
When Should a Buyer Evaluate Peeled or TGP Round Bar?
For round shafts, piston-rod stock or precision rotating components, the buyer may need to compare turned/peeled or TGP routes. These processes can be appropriate when outside-surface removal, roundness, straightness or a ground finish is more important than retaining a multi-sided or custom section.
“TGP” is not automatically the correct answer for every shaft. The drawing should state finished diameter, straightness, surface requirement, heat-treatment condition, machining allowance and whether chrome plating or another finish will be performed downstream.
