420F and SUS420F Free-Machining Stainless Steel Bars
Short Answer for 420F Stainless Steel Buyers
Junxiong Metal can review commercial enquiries for 420F stainless steel, 420FSe and SUS420F bar products. Buyers must identify the exact designation, governing standard and edition, product shape, supplied condition, downstream heat-treatment plan, dimensions, tolerance, quantity, destination and certificate requirements.
These names are related procurement terms, not an automatic equivalence approval. SAE 420F or 420FSe and JIS SUS420F must be checked against the buyer’s controlling document. They must not be substituted with 430F, SUS430F, EN 1.4104 or EN 1.4105 without an engineering and purchase-standard review.

Image boundary: steel grade, microstructure, sulfur or selenium route and hardness cannot be verified from appearance. These images support product-form and packing discussions only and are not 420F batch evidence.
Supply Scope and Evidence Boundary
Junxiong has confirmed commercial supply capability for 420F and SUS420F enquiries. Feasibility is reviewed for the exact grade, standard, shape, size, condition, tolerance, quantity and inspection scope before an order is accepted.
Evidence boundary: this supply statement is not a current-stock declaration, shipment record, heat certificate, hardness report or dimensional inspection report. Grade identity and order acceptance depend on the approved specification and matching order or batch documents.
Technical Facts Buyers Must Confirm
| Decision | Required RFQ information |
|---|---|
| Grade route | State 420F, 420FSe, SUS420F or another designation together with the governing standard and edition. Do not send only a cross-reference name. |
| Product standard | Identify the specification that controls bar form, finish, condition, dimensions, testing and acceptance. |
| Delivery condition | State annealed or other required supplied condition, plus any buyer-approved hardness or property limits. |
| Downstream processing | Describe machining, hardening, tempering, grinding, plating, passivation or other operations that affect allowance and inspection. |
| Dimensions | Finished size, tolerance, straightness, twist, surface, length and machining or grinding allowance. |
| Traceability | Required MTC type, heat identity, chemistry, hardness, mechanical tests and any third-party inspection. |
| Commercial data | Quantity per size, repeat demand, packing, destination country, port and required delivery schedule. |
420F Bar Shape and RFQ Selection
| Shape | Buyer must state | Standard and feasibility boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Round bar | Diameter, tolerance, straightness, surface, length and machining or bar-feeder requirement. | ASTM A582/A582M includes free-machining stainless rounds; exact grade, finish and condition remain purchase-order decisions. |
| Square bar | Side size, corner radius, tolerance, twist, straightness and length. | ASTM A582/A582M includes squares; factory review confirms the exact grade-size-condition route. |
| Hexagonal bar | Across-flats size, corner condition, tolerance, twist, straightness and length. | ASTM A582/A582M includes hexagons; tooling, minimum quantity and inspection depend on the order. |
| Flat bar | Width, thickness, edge condition, flatness, straightness and length. | Do not assume the A582 bar-shape scope covers the requested flat product. State the exact governing product standard for feasibility review. |
| Custom profile | Dimensioned drawing, datums, critical tolerances, corner radii, annual demand and trial quantity. | A drawing review is required; no standard-shape availability or automatic material substitution is implied. |
420F Standards and Primary Reference Sources
- ASTM A582/A582M-22: active ASTM specification for hot- or cold-finished free-machining stainless steel bars, including rounds, squares and hexagons.
- SAE AMS5620J: current aerospace material specification for 420F and 420FSe free-machining grade bars, wire, forgings and forging stock in the annealed condition.
- SAE J405_201801: SAE wrought stainless steel chemistry designation reference; it is not by itself a complete bar purchase specification.
- JIS G 4303:2021: current Japanese stainless steel bar standard route covering hot-worked round, square, hexagonal and flat bars. The buyer must verify the exact SUS designation and ordered condition.
- JIS G 4318:2016: Japanese standard route for cold-finished stainless steel bars; exact grade, dimensions and condition must be specified.
- ISO 16143-2:2014: general-purpose corrosion-resistant stainless semi-finished products, bars, rods and sections. It supports product-standard review, not automatic grade equivalence.
Reference boundary: standards-publisher pages establish scope and verification routes. They are not Junxiong heat certificates, do not prove current stock and do not authorize substitution among 420F, 420FSe, SUS420F, 430F, 1.4104 or 1.4105.

FAQ for 420F and SUS420F Stainless Bar Buyers
Is 420F the same as standard 420 stainless steel?
No automatic substitution should be made. The free-machining designation changes the procurement and machining route, while the governing standard, chemistry, condition, heat treatment and acceptance requirements control the order.
Are 420F and SUS420F automatically interchangeable?
No. They are useful cross-market inquiry terms, but the SAE or ASTM route and the JIS route must be checked against the buyer’s controlling standard and required condition.
Is 420F equivalent to 430F, 1.4104 or 1.4105?
No. 420F is a hardenable martensitic free-machining route, while 430F and associated European designations follow different grade and product-standard routes. A search-name resemblance is not a substitution approval.
What is 420FSe?
420FSe is a separately identified free-machining route included in SAE AMS5620J. The buyer must state whether 420F or 420FSe is required; Junxiong will not silently replace one with the other.
Can Junxiong review 420F cold-finished round, square or hex bar?
Yes. Send the exact standard, condition, dimensions, tolerances, surface, heat-treatment plan, quantity and destination for factory feasibility review.
Can hardness and heat-treatment requirements be added to the RFQ?
Yes. State the supplied condition, downstream process, target range, test method, test location and certificate requirements before quotation.
Does this page prove a current 420F heat is in stock?
No. Current stock, heat identity and test results require a matching quotation, stock record or order-specific MTC.
