Hex Bar Standards for Carbon and Stainless Routes
- ASTM A108-24: the active ASTM product specification for carbon and alloy cold-finished steel bars.
- BS EN 10277:2018: an EN bright-steel technical-delivery route.
- ASTM A276/A276M-25: an ASTM route for applicable stainless bars and shapes.
- ASTM A582/A582M-22: an ASTM route for free-machining stainless steel bars when that specification is ordered.
Hex-bar boundary: carbon, alloy, free-cutting and stainless routes are separate. Across-flats size, corner condition, twist, straightness, delivery condition and machining performance are not established by a similar grade name or product photo. The buyer’s drawing, ordered standard, downstream process, inspection plan and heat-specific MTC control acceptance.
Applications
- Nuts, bolts, fasteners and fittings
- CNC turning and lathe machining
- Industrial connectors and mechanical hardware
Why Use Cold Drawn Hex Bar?
Hexagonal steel bars are commonly used when the final part needs wrench flats or stable gripping during machining. Cold drawing helps improve size consistency, surface appearance and machining preparation.
How Should a Buyer Specify Hex Bar Size?
Specify a regular hexagonal bar by its nominal across-flats (AF) dimension. Do not order it only by an outside diameter. For a theoretically sharp-cornered regular hexagon, the across-corners value is approximately AF divided by cos 30 degrees, or 1.1547 times AF. Actual corner radius, drawing tolerance and measurement method can change the measured corner value, so the approved drawing remains the controlling document.
| RFQ Item | What to State |
|---|---|
| Nominal size | Across-flats dimension and unit |
| Dimensional control | AF tolerance, measurement location and any across-corners reference limit |
| Corner condition | Permitted corner radius, edge condition and whether corners are functional |
| Form control | Straightness and twist requirement over the ordered bar length |
| Ends and length | Mill length or fixed cut length, length tolerance, chamfer and burr requirement |
| Material condition | Grade, governing standard, delivery condition and required documents |
Which Material Route Fits the Final Hexagonal Part?
The final component and its manufacturing route should decide the material, not the shape name alone. Free-cutting grades may suit repeated automatic turning where machinability is the main requirement. Carbon or alloy steels may be selected where the drawing controls strength or subsequent heat treatment. Selected stainless grades may be reviewed where corrosion resistance and machining behavior are relevant. Similar grade names from different standards are not treated as automatic equivalents.
- For 1215, 12L14, 11SMn30, 11SMnPb30, SUM23 and SUM24L purchasing language, review the free-cutting steel bars by shape guide.
- For 303, 416, 430F, SUS430F and 1.4104 buying considerations, review the stainless cold drawn bars and profiles guide.
- Confirm chemical, mechanical, hardness, heat-treatment and regulatory requirements from the ordered standard and purchase specification.
What Should Be Agreed Before Trial and Batch Production?
Mark the dimensions that control wrench engagement, chucking, thread production, sealing or final assembly. Agree how AF size, straightness, twist, surface and cut length will be inspected. If the bars will be forged, machined, plated or heat treated, state those operations before quotation because they may change the required allowance and delivery condition.
Also list the trial quantity, annual demand, MTC or inspection report requirement, marking, rust protection, bundle weight and destination. A representative product image proves the hexagonal form; it does not prove the grade, heat number or ordered tolerance of a future shipment.
Common Grade Routes for Cold Drawn Hex Bar RFQs
Always specify hex bar by across-flats size, not an assumed diameter. The material names below are RFQ and comparison routes; they do not prove equivalence or current stock.
| Hex-bar route | Typical buyer intent | Required confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| SAE 1117 hex-bar RFQs, SAE 1141 hex-bar RFQs, 1215, 12L14 and SAE 1144 hex bar | Fittings, plugs, nuts and turned parts that retain wrench flats. | Keep each grade route separate. Confirm the exact grade and standard, lead restriction, across-flats tolerance, corner form, twist, length and MTC. |
| 11SMn30, 11SMnPb30, SUM23 and SUM24L hex bar | EN/DIN or JIS free-cutting inquiries. | These are not automatic substitutes for SAE grades. State the governing standard, chemistry, properties and restricted-substance requirements. |
| 303, 304, 316 / 316L, 416, 430F / SUS430F / 1.4104 hex bar and 420F / 420FSe / SUS420F hex-bar RFQs | Corrosion-resistant or free-machining stainless fittings and hardware. | Exact stainless grade, governing bar standard, condition, surface, corrosion duty and heat-treatment route. Keep 316 and 316L separate and do not merge 420F with 430F. |
| C15 / S15C / SAE 1015 hex-bar RFQs, C35 / S35C / SAE 1035 hex-bar RFQs, EN3B / 070M20 hex-bar RFQs, 1018 hex bar, 1020 carbon steel hex bar, SAE 1026 hex-bar RFQs and SAE 1040 / 1050 / 1060 hex-bar RFQs | Machined fittings, fasteners and hardware where the buyer specifies a low- or medium/high-carbon route. | Keep each grade separate. Confirm the governing standard, across-flats tolerance, condition, properties, straightness and MTC. |
| 4140 / 42CrMo4 hex bar | Higher-load fittings and machined alloy-steel parts. | Ordered standard, annealed or heat-treated condition, hardness, across-flats size and batch certificate. |
| 40Cr / 5140 / 41Cr4 / SCr440 hex-bar RFQs | Chromium-alloy fittings and machined parts that retain wrench flats. | Do not approve these names as automatic equivalents. Confirm the exact standard, condition, across-flats size, hardness and heat-specific MTC. |
| 8620 / 20NiCrMo2-2 hex bar and 16MnCr5 / 20MnCr5 / SAE 5120 / 20Cr hex-bar RFQs | Machined case-hardening parts that retain wrench flats. | Confirm the exact grade and standard, across-flats size, incoming condition, machining allowance, carburizing route, case/core criteria and batch certificate. |
| 52100 / 100Cr6 / SUJ2 / GCr15 hex bar | Special bearing or wear-component blanks where hexagonal geometry is required. | Confirm feasibility by exact standard, condition, across-flats size, corner form, cleanliness, carbide controls and MTC; do not assume availability from the grade name. |
Use the free-cutting steel shape guide when machining rate drives the selection, and include the finished-part drawing when flats, chamfers or corner geometry are functional.
